NYFW FW15 Recap | Days 1-5

New York Fashion Week is more than half way through and there have been some amazing shows!

I have often been asked what I think about fashion shows. People have said to me 'They're so over the top' or 'They don't offer practical, wearable clothing options' and thus, they don't feel like the shows are relevant to them.  While both of these statements may be true, I would respond that the shows, like the top fashion magazines, are all about the art of fashion. They are a chance to be inspired and overwhelmed by the creative power that fashion holds. While they may not always offer practicality, they are a chance to stir your imagination, to push your fashion sense, and re-infuse creativity into your wardrobe. In addition, the themes of these shows are the trends that will be prevalent in the upcoming season and will definitely be found in the practical clothing options that you will be buying for fall.

Now, onto the shows! Below I have highlighted a few of my favorites as well as a few extras to help you gain an understanding of what the Fall 2015 trends will be. I have sorted my favorites in rank order and also included a brief description around each show. To see the entire shows, simply click the designers name. Enjoy!

The Shows

Jason Wu

My favorite fall collection! Jason Wu's show embodied the chic, glamorous working woman and the cinched waist silhouettes certainly tied it all together. I am in love!

Zac Posen

Another one of my favorites: Zac Posen. The seventies vibe that was apparent in a lot of the shows this season definitely comes through here. I love how tailored, yet glamorous all the looks were. And the monochromatic scheme made it all the more chic!

BCBG

Inspired by embroidered textiles during a recent trip from Barcelona to the Baltic Sea, Lubov and Max Azria's Fall 2015 collection offers beautifully embroidered, mixed media pieces with pops of bright blue and red, all while staying true to the brands flowly, bohemian style. How great is the outerwear in this collection?!

Tibi

Neutral tones, monochromatic looks, and oversized pieces made for one wearable, cozy, yet chic collection. Tibi's looks could easily be my uniform for Fall 2015.

Dennis Basso

Dennis Basso was inspired by the "glamour of the seventies" for this collection and it definitely shows! It may be a bit over the top but who wouldn't want to throw one of these looks on for a fabulous night out?!

Derek Lam

Derek Lam found inspiration, he said, in “New York women, specifically Mia Farrow, Dianne Wiest and those Woody Allen kinds of characters." I like the simplicity and wear-ability of this collection and love the chic seventies vibe that was apparent throughout Lam's (and many other designer's) Fall 2015 collections.

Thakoon

Thakoon's collection had a very rustic feel that shifted to more romantic shades of blue and burgundy for evening wear. There was also a bit of a seventies vibe going on in most looks - again a definite theme for Fall 2015. Although it was not one of my favorite collections, I would definitely snatch up a few of his fur outwear pieces that is if I could afford them!

 DKNY

While the DKNY collection was not necessarily one of my favorites, I can appreciate the creativity behind it. Donna Karen said she was inspired by “The New York woman who dresses day to night, who’s illuminated by black with shots of color and neon lights" and her collection certainly embodied this statement. The menswear inspired looks with unexpected pops of sparkle and color as well as the oversized pieces are certainly an indication of a few Fall 2015 trends.

Tommy Hilfiger

You can always expect a fun theme from Hilfiger, and he certainly did not disappoint this year! Hilfiger scored a touchdown with his collegiate football inspired collection, and although it was a bit much, it definitely drew out the warm and fuzzy feelings I have for the fall season. Plus, collegiate inspired looks will never go out of style.

 The Presentations

Designer presentations are a relatively new trend. While there may be many different reasons for a designer choosing a presentation versus a show, the two main reasons are (1) The designer is less established or (2) Time frame. A runway show has a hard stop while a presentation has a time frame - say a two hour window - which provides the opportunity for much more editors, bloggers, and influencers to see and review the collections.

I really enjoyed this blog post about the pros and cons of runway shows and presentations if you're interested in learning more about the two.

Kaelen

Without a doubt my favorite show. Soft pinks, chic outerwear, and classic pieces make me want to buy the entire Kaelen collection!

See by Chloe

This collection is what I think of when I think of fall. A collegiate touch, a school girl vibe, and cozy knits. I would love to pull off the high knee socks plus shorts look!

Banana Republic

I have to say I was impressed with the BR collection this year. Timeless with a bit of a twist is how I see this collection and I could definitely see myself buying any one of these looks. Definitely on trend with the monochromatic look, the pops of color, and oversized outerwear.

 Red Valentino

Whimsical and girly with the ever popular seventies vibe. This collection has such a cool school girl vibe. I would love to have at least one of these fun pieces in my fall wardrobe.

Kate Spade New York

A collection full of the most perfect pink pieces - I am sold!

The Fall 2015 Trends

The seventies are making a comeback
Opt for a full monochromatic outfit to look instantly chic
Fur outerwear is here to stay
Culottes are the pant silhouette of the season
Oversized pieces will keep us all warm (and on trend) next fall

Fashion Week ends on Thursday so be sure to check back in for my recap of days 6-8 later this week!
